There are some very expensive cities in the world that most of the general global population would simply not be able to afford to live in. This only makes these cities more appealing to everyday people and they often add these unique destinations to their holiday list, in hopes that one day they may be lucky enough to visit. There are numerous factors that make such cities so expensive. Take into account currency and exchange rates, cost of living, lifestyle and employment. In general interest, here are some of the most expensive cities to live in.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

Located at the base of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera, Monte Carlo has a reputation for accommodating some of the most successful people from a variety of fields as permanent residents. Notable athletes and celebrities tend to find Monte Carlo home during their off-peak or transition periods. Although Monaco is a tax-free country, most of the real estate available tends to be in the millions of dollars. You would have to be quite wealthy to establish a permanent presence here.

Tokyo, Japan

It is the world’s largest agglomeration economy, hosting 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies. It is recently known as one of the world’s most liveable cities, however one of the most expensive. The constant rise in residents creates endless competition for accommodation and increasing prices that are becoming unaffordable. The metropolitan area can cost up to $5,000 a month for 2 bedroom apartments.

London, UK

London is becoming more and more popular for migrants and other UK citizens to call home. The increase in demand and limited supply has seen accommodation and transportation prices raise higher than ever before. The capital and largest city in the United Kingdom is located on the River Thames and is one of the most cultural societies. It is also the most visited city in the world, alongside Paris, based on international arrivals. It is one the most favourable cities to reside due to the diverse environment, education and sports.

Accommodation can cost ridiculous amounts if located anywhere within Manhattan area, up to $2,600 per month for a standard apartments with the bare basic facilities. One of the most prominent cities, New York boasts endless attractions for both residents and tourists to enjoy year round, amongst that include Broadway, numerous sports and Time Square. A diverse climate is also favourable.The cities on this list may have been somewhat expected, however taking into account the exchange rate, employment and cost of living allows these to be some of the most expensive cities. Generally the most popular cities in their respected continents, this also makes them expensive tourist destinations to visit.
