I couldn’t agree more on the prepaid idea! But in agreement with Herbert, I’m afraid this would just end up in virtual “fist fights” with the electric companies. It wouldn’t hurt to give it a try also.

The idea of having smart meters is good, it will provide information to users on thier energy consumption and how to reduce it. Hopefully, we can have the same system here in Philippines.

I think even if they transform it to prepaid electricity or whatever, we will still pay for a high amount, that we don’t even consume. There are people who use “jumpers” and whatever they say, it all end up having all of us pay while they get free electricity.

a prepaid service is good as long as the fees are regulated, i am against estimated billing system, you are right the calculated estimated amounts is more often much higher than the actual usage

I think that’s a great move. That means they are consumer focused and not profit greedy.

@Mai Flores: Yes, i think the prepaid thing by Meralco is great. I hope it becomes a standard. It will really force us to control our electricity usage

The first thing that came into mind while reading your post was Meralco — one of the Philippines electric company’s. I actually heard from someone about Meralco’s plans of offering its clients a prepaid-service (so that they won’t also be shocked with their bills). This to me, somehow resembles BGB’s energy billing strategy.
